Safran Engineering Services joins with Duncan Aviation to develop a solution for Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast Out (ADS-B Out)
Everett, WA USA – November 12th, 2014
Safran Engineering Services, a subsidiary of Labinal Power Systems (Safran), a world leader in engineering services for Aerospace, announces that it is developing with Duncan Aviation of Lincoln (Nebraska), an Approved Model List Supplemental Type Certificate (AML-STC), for Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast "Out" (ADS- B Out), utilizing the Rockwell Collins TDR-94D Transponder.
Safran Engineering Services and Duncan Aviation are responsible for the design, development, integration, testing and certification of the AML-STC for the ADS-B "Out" FAA mandated requirement. The Safran Engineering Services ADS-B Out AML-STC solution will initially cover the Bombardier Challenger 601-3A/3R, Lear 60, Gulfstream G100, G200 and the Textron Hawker 800 Series.
In addition to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval, Safran Engineering Services intends to seek appropriate approvals with Transport Canada (TC) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for the aforementioned aircraft models, which will streamline the installation process for ADS-B Out equipage in the United States, Canada and in Europe.
"Duncan Aviation is a leader in business aircraft maintenance and modifications and we are very pleased to be working closely with them to create ADS-B Out solutions to meet the 2020 mandate. This AML-STC will be made available to all Rockwell Collins Authorized Sales & Service Center installation facilities around the globe streamlining the installation process and allowing customers easier access to ADS-B solutions." said Scott Hall, US Sales Manager for Safran Engineering Services.
"As a result of our partnership with Safran, we're going to be able to fulfill an immense need as owners and operators bring their aircraft into compliance. With twenty satellite installation facilities and three, full-service facilities throughout the United States, Duncan Aviation is in a unique position to help the industry meet this mandate by 2020. We have the technical know-how, talent and facilities to install the Rockwell Collins TDR-94D Mode S Transponder upgrades, and with our co-partner development of the AML-STC, our systems will be installed and upgraded very easily," says Mark Francetic, Duncan Aviation Regional Avionics Sales Manager.
About ADS-B "Out":
The Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast is a cooperative system of surveillance for air-traffic control. With ADS-B, each aircraft needs an approved ADS-B position source to calculate its precise position using highly accurate GPS data. This position is then broadcast to ATC and other ADS-B "In" equipped aircraft in their vicinity. ADS-B "Out" systems automatically broadcast an aircraft's GPS position about every second.
With ADS-B, each aircraft broadcasts its own GPS position along with other information, including heading, ground track, ground speed, altitude. Receivers on the ground then receive this information and send it to air traffic control displays. The ADS-B information can be used to augment existing primary and secondary (transponder-based) radar or used in lieu of those radar technologies. Aircraft that broadcast this information are considered to be equipped with ADS-B Out.
The FAA has mandated ADS-B Out by 2020 on all aircraft operating in Class A, B and C airspace as well as Class E airspace above 10,000 ft, within 30 nautical miles of class B (Mode-C airspace), above class B and C airspace, and at or above 3,000 ft. over the Gulf of Mexico extending 12 nautical miles from the coastline of the United States.
A supplemental type certificate (STC) is a type certificate (TC) issued when an applicant has received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval to modify an aircraft from its original design. The STC, which incorporates by reference the related TC, approves not only the modification but also how that modification affects the original design.
An AML STC approval process utilizes a single approval for STC to type certificate products that were originally approved separately. Whenever a type certificated product is added or a document is amended, deleted, or added, the AML is revised and approved.
About the Rockwell Collins TDR-94D:
The Rockwell Collins TDR-94D is a 1090MHz extended squitter (ES) Mode S transponder that is designed to meet the U.S. and international mandates for ADS-B Out. The AML-STC provides approval for use of varying sensors from Honeywell, Rockwell Collins and Universal Avionics as the precision GPS position source for the TDR-94D.
