Tyler Moore, a rising engineer at Twinsburg

Tyler Moore is a lead engineer for the Boeing 777X Ram Air Turbine Generator at Safran Electrical & Power Twinsburg. Passionate about the Aerospace industry, he completed his end-of-study internship at Safran and was hired in May 2016.

Which studies have you followed?

Tyler moore: I went to the University of Akron where I received my Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Prior to going to the University of Akron, I worked at a manufacturing facility where I was a Machine Operator and Machinist Apprentice. This experience along with growing up on farm (where things always broke and needed fixed) piqued my interest in mechanical design and pushed me to attain my Mechanical Engineering Degree.

Why did you choose Safran Electrical & Power for your internship?

T.M.: Growing up, I always had an interest in the aerospace industry. In late 2013, I had a few offers for internships with different companies, one being Safran. At that time, the Twinsburg site had just been recently acquired by Safran. Safran stood out the most to me because of their presence in the Aerospace industry and their push to become the world leader in aerospace electrical power systems. After visiting the Twinsburg site and meeting with several of the engineers that I still work with today, it seemed like the perfect fit for me with huge potential to turn into a permanent position.

Can you describe your job ?

T.M.: I am part of the Electric Machines Engineering (motors and generators) department in Twinsburg, where I am currently the lead engineer for the Boeing 777x Ram Air Turbine Generator, which is part of an aircraft's emergency power system. I became the lead engineer after the initial design phase was complete and the generator was going into qualification. Prior to becoming the lead engineer, I was a support engineer for the program, assisting with detailed design, development testing, etc. I lead the generator program through a successful qualification test campaign and I am now primarily focused on production support, Industrialization, and Customer support in order to meet and exceed expectations and schedules of the customer.

What do you enjoy about working at Safran Electrical & Power?

T.M.: The many opportunities for growth, both professionally and personally, and the people. Ever since I started as a mechanical engineering intern, I had the opportunities to work on many different projects and work with many knowledgeable people that have helped me develop into the Engineer I am today. As an intern, I assisted in the development of the Bell 525 AC* and DC** main generators and developed test setups for multiple generator and Ram Air Turbine projects. After my last internship, I was offered a full-time position in the Machines department where I worked on both the MA700 and 777 and Ram Air Turbine Generator programs. Shortly after, I was given the opportunity to do a developmental rotation in the through life support department in Pitstone, which then lead to being the US engineering support representative for the Boeing EcoDemonstrator engine testing. Then, I became the lead engineer of the 777x generator program. Through all of these different projects/programs, I have built an extensive network of people who are passionate about what they do and have been supportive and helpful to guide me in the right direction. Overall, I am grateful for the support and guidance I have receive from my colleagues and also for the ample opportunities that Safran Electrical and Power has provided over the last 5 years.

And what do you expect for your future?

T.M.: I am excited to continue growing with Safran Electrical and Power as we push to be the world leader in electrical systems. There is still so much to learn and I can't wait to see what new opportunities arise as the aerospace industry evolves.
